A cozy, cheesy, and satisfying French onion ground beef and rice casserole made with caramelized onions, savory beef, and tender rice baked in a creamy broth.

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • 1 cup uncooked white rice

  • 1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup

  • 1½ cups beef broth

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1½ cups shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Optional: Fresh parsley, fried onions for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 baking dish.

  2. Caramelize onions in butter over medium heat (15–20 min). Set aside.

  3. Brown ground beef in the same skillet. Combine with onions.

  4. In a large bowl, mix rice, French onion soup, broth, sour cream, Worcestershire, and beef-onion mixture.

  5. Pour into baking dish. Cover tightly with foil and bake 50–55 minutes.

  6. Remove foil, top with cheese, and bake 10 more minutes. Broil for a golden top if desired.

  7. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

  • Use cooked rice to shorten bake time.

  • Add mushrooms or herbs for extra flavor.
