1 lb ground beef
2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tbsp olive oil or butter
1 cup uncooked white rice
1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup
1½ cups beef broth
½ cup sour cream
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1½ cups shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: Fresh parsley, fried onions for topping
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 baking dish.
Caramelize onions in butter over medium heat (15–20 min). Set aside.
Brown ground beef in the same skillet. Combine with onions.
In a large bowl, mix rice, French onion soup, broth, sour cream, Worcestershire, and beef-onion mixture.
Pour into baking dish. Cover tightly with foil and bake 50–55 minutes.
Remove foil, top with cheese, and bake 10 more minutes. Broil for a golden top if desired.
Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
Use cooked rice to shorten bake time.
Add mushrooms or herbs for extra flavor.
